What is a medical ID?
A medical ID is an identification tag that is custom engraved with your vital medical information. Also known as medical ID jewelry, an ID is often worn by those living with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, allergies, autism, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, hypertension, Parkinson, etc.; individuals who lead an active lifestyle, or with mobility challenges wear an ID for daily peace of mind and protection.
An emergency ID can be worn on your wrist, around your neck, on your shoe or in the form of a wallet card. If you experience a medical emergency or are in an accident, a medical ID will speak for you when you cannot.
What does a medical ID look like?
A medical ID can be a bracelet, necklace, shoe tag or the form of a wallet card, or Smart Medical ID card. The front of a MedicAlert will feature MedicAlert’s world renown emblem. The back side is either customed engraved with your critical lifesaving medical information or features a QR code encrypted with that same vital medical information. The MedicAlert emblem is recognized by first responders around the world.
Yes, First Responders look for medical IDs
First responders are trained by MedicAlert to look for medical ID bracelets, necklaces, shoe tags and wallet cards. Custom engraved information on an emergency ID bracelet can help EMS, doctors, nurses and other emergency professionals treat you in an emergency.
When first responders identify a MedicAlert ID, they will turn the ID over or scan the QR code to quickly read your vital medical information. Next, first responders will contact our 24/7 emergency response service using your unique MedicAlert member number. Our 24/7 emergency response team will relay your complete medical history to the person treating you – so you’ll receive fast, accurate care, the moment you need it. Our emergency response specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
How do I select a MedicAlert ID?
When selecting a medical ID it’s important to keep these three things in mind:
1) Emblem size: Be sure to select an ID that has an emblem size that can fit all of your medical information, the information that first responders will need to know in an emergency.
2) Style: MedicAlert has a wide variety of bracelets, necklaces, shoe tags, wallet cards and even a Smart Medical ID card with a QR code. The style of you ID should fit your lifestyle and match your personality. For example, our Smart Medical ID card with proven QR code technology is perfect for someone who doesn’t want to wear ID bracelet or necklace. Or if you lead a very active lifestyle our Medical ID for Apple Watch is a great choice – because it easily slides on the watch band. We have many of our members choose two IDs –one for everyday use and one for special occasions.
3) Fit: Your ID should fit securely and comfortably around your wrist or neck.
Use our sizing guide to help you find the perfect fit.
What information should I engrave on a medical ID?
Engrave your MedicAlert ID with the important information that needs to be communicated to first responders in an emergency – such as: medical conditions, medications, allergies, medication allergies, implanted devices etc. This is the information that can protect and save your life. MedicAlert ID offers free custom engraving with every ID purchase.
Do I need to buy a MedicAlert membership plan to purchase a MedicAlert ID?
A membership plan is not required when you purchase an engraved MedicAlert ID product, but it is strongly recommended. Without a membership, you miss out on many of MedicAlert’s lifesaving benefits. With a membership, you get a detailed digital health profile, and support from our 24/7 emergency response service to relay your information to first responders. In addition, most plans have emergency contact notification, so that if you have an incident, MedicAlert can reach out to your loved ones so you’re not alone. View our membership plans here.
Note that for our digital products – including the Smart Medical ID Card and ICE Tags – an active membership is required. These products use a QR code to quickly access your health record. A membership enables you to keep your digital health record and emergency contacts up to date at all times, and protects you by making sure that first responders have all the information they need to treat you quickly and safely.
