70 Years of MedicAlert: A Story That Could Save Your Life
Seventy years ago, a father almost lost his daughter. She had a severe allergic reaction. Help was there. Doctors were there. But no one knew what was wrong. That moment changed everything in emergency medicine.
Because what happened next didn’t just save one life – it created a way to protect millions, including people like you and the ones you love most.
1950's
The Moment Everything Changed
14-year-old Linda Collins suffered a life-threatening reaction from a cut on her finger. Her father, Dr. Marion Collins, knew of her allergy but wasn’t there to tell anyone.
And that was it – in an emergency, the problem isn’t always help – it’s information.
What if, in an emergency, you can’t speak for yourself?
So he created something simple – a bracelet that could.
In 1956, the MedicAlert Foundation was born. A small idea with one powerful purpose:
to make sure no one faces a medical emergency alone, unheard, or unknown.
The Moment Everything Changed
1960's
Brenda, a member since 1969 with brittle diabetes, credits her MedicAlert bracelet for saving her life – more than once. Brenda says:
“I don’t just wear my MedicAlert ID - I rely on it.”
A Lifeline Begins to Spread
What started as one bracelet quickly became something more. As more people joined, they realized: this wasn’t just helpful – it was lifesaving.
MedicAlert introduced:
- A 24-hour emergency phone service
- Global expansion – personally funded by Dr. Collins leading to international affiliates operating out of Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and West Africa.
- A partnership with the American Medical Association which reinforced MedicAlert’s credibility.
For the first time, over 20,000 people had something they never had before:
A voice in an emergency.
Frank has been trusting MedicAlert since 1967 - he lives with severe allergies and has suffered anaphylactic shock before. Frank says:
“MedicAlert is my best defense against my life-threatening allergy. If I ever go into anaphylactic shock again, my MedicAlert ID will communicate to an emergency response team exactly what I am allergic to.
The very information that can save my life sits on my wrist. You can’t beat that!”
1970's
From Idea to Lifesaving System
As more people relied on MedicAlert, one thing became clear:
In an emergency, speed and accuracy could mean the difference between life and death.
So, MedicAlert evolved.
In the 70s, we introduced one of the first computerized medical databases – allowing critical health information to be accessed faster and more reliably than ever before.
What started as a bracelet was becoming a coordinated, life-saving system. Even after the passing of Dr. Collins, the mission never slowed. His wife, Chrissie, and daughter, Linda carried it forward – ensuring MedicAlert stayed true to its purpose: To protect people when they cannot speak for themselves.
With endorsement from the American Hospital Association and growing trust among first responders, MedicAlert reached a major milestone:
Over one million members are protected. And that system is still saving lives today.
Aimee & Brandon's MedicAlert Story
Aimee’s son Brandon, who has autism, wandered away from home. A stranger found him – and called the number on his MedicAlert ID.
Within moments:
- MedicAlert identified Brandon
- Contacted his parents
- Alerted local authorities
- Provided his exact location
What could have been a tragedy ended in relief, because his information was accessible when it mattered most.
Aimee stated: “MedicAlert’s emergency response team called me, notified our local police, and told me exactly where I could go to pick up Brandon; I was so grateful that day and always – MedicAlert is our lifeline.”
1980's
Recognition When Seconds Matter
By the 1980s, MedicAlert had become more than a bracelet. It had become a signal first responders knew and trusted.
Because in an emergency, MedicAlert isn’t just helpful – it saves precious seconds. And seconds save lives.
To make MedicAlert universal, we expanded our reach:
- National partnerships with organizations like the American Diabetes Association
- Support from major insurers including MetLife and John Hancock
- Public awareness campaigns featuring trusted voices and celebrities including Cher, Carol Burnett, Ed Asner, Donny and Marie Osmond, Tony Randall, Chris Evert, James Earl Jones, and Susan Anton.
- Appearances on national television shows like CHiPs, Columbo, Good Morning America, and Today, bringing the MedicAlert emblem into homes across the country.

Wherever people looked, they began to recognize the MedicAlert symbol – it became synonymous with emergency medicine.
MedicAlert evolved with members’ lives.
New designs, including sterling silver and gold emblems were introduced, combining style with safety, which made it easier for people to wear their protection every day.
Because the most effective protection is the one you never take off.
There are countless moments where a MedicAlert ID has been spotted – on a wrist, around the neck – and immediately changed what happened next.
Treatment was adjusted. Mistakes were avoided. More lives were saved.
1990's
When Innovation Meant Faster, Lifesaving Care
By the 1990s, MedicAlert wasn’t just recognized, it was relied on. Because in an emergency, it’s not just about having information. It’s about getting it – fast.
This decade brought critical advancements that made protection stronger than ever:
- National recognition, including the American Medical Association honoring Chrissie Collins for her lifesaving impact, giving her the Citation of Distinguished Service, the highest honor the association awarded to a non-physician.
- Increased awareness, with MedicAlert recognized across communities and healthcare systems. For example, California proclaimed the month of August the National MedicAlert Awareness Month.
- Faster production of medical IDs with the acquisition of a laser engraver, ensuring members could be protected sooner.
- The launch of the first MedicAlert website – giving members direct access to manage their medical information.
Everything was moving in one direction: Faster access. Faster response. Better outcomes. And for members, that made all the difference.
Lynn has trusted MedicAlert since 1987. And in that time, it has saved her life – three times.
Today, Lynn is not only a member – but a donor. Because she knows what’s at stake.
“I am extremely proud to be a MedicAlert member and donor to assist others like me— but who may be less fortunate— to afford the same peace of mind: that when they are alone or out with others who are not aware of their medical conditions, they will get the assistance they need in a medical crisis.
THANK YOU!”
- Lynn, MedicAlert member since 1997
2000's
A Legacy That Lives On
By the 2000s, MedicAlert had become something more than an idea. It was a legacy – carried forward by generations. When Linda Collins, MedicAlert’s first member, passed away, she left behind more than a story. She left behind a movement that had already saved countless lives.
At the same time, the world was changing, and MedicAlert evolved with it.
Members could now both enroll & update their medical information online.
This meant that their records were always current and accessible.
They could even plan ahead with expanded services and end-of-life directives.
Because protection isn’t just about the moment an emergency happens.
It’s about being prepared for anything – before it does.
Today
Protection When Every Second Counts
Seventy years later, the mission remains the same. But the way we protect people has never been more powerful.
Today, MedicAlert provides:
- Instant access to medical information for first responders
- Direct integration with 911 systems through partners like RapidSOS
- Protection for vulnerable individuals through Safe & Found services
- QR-enabled medical IDs that connect to real-time health records
And most importantly: A voice when it matters most.
Drew loves his QR code medical ID, and says:
“The innovation of the ID enhances the accessibility, the ease of use, and my peace of mind.”

70 Years Later
This story is still being written.
From one father’s determination to a global network of protection, MedicAlert has spent 70 years doing one thing: Making sure no one faces a medical emergency alone.
But the truth is: The next life hasn’t been saved yet. The next emergency hasn’t happened yet. The next moment when someone can’t speak for themselves is still ahead.
That’s why this still matters, all these years later. It could be you who needs MedicAlert some day. Your spouse. Your parent. Your child. Because emergencies don’t wait, and they don’t ask if you’re ready.
One simple thing can make all the difference. A bracelet. A card. A digital profile.
MedicAlert is a voice when you need it most.
Protect yourself - and the people you love.
With Gratitude - and What Comes Next
As we celebrate this milestone, we honor:
Dr. Marion Collins and the Collins family, the ones who started it all
The millions of MedicAlert members who trust us with their lives
The first responders who rely on MedicAlert every day
And most importantly – people like you, who are a part of this story.
Here’s to the next 70 years of saving lives, together.
