MedicAlert LIVE Healthy Hour - COVID19 Q & A with Dr. David Shulkin

Last week we held our first ever MedicAlert LIVE Healthy Hour – a live session answering many of your questions about the coronavirus. Our special guest, the Honorable Dr. David Shulkin, offered deep insights and practical advice for living during these challenging times. In addition to the many questions we received about the coronavirus, several of you asked about MedicAlert. Although we didn’t have time to answer those questions during the Healthy Hour, we wanted to let all our members know how MedicAlert is operating during the pandemic.

Q. How is MedicAlert changing its business practices in response to COVID-19? (Submitted by: Andrew)

A. The important thing to know is that MedicAlert is fully operational during this time. Our 24/7 emergency response team is unaffected and standing by to serve our members and first responders. We’ve moved all of our phone operations to work virtually. Our essential manufacturing and fulfillment operations continue at our Turlock, CA headquarters, as we are unable to move the laser engraver to a home environment. In the manufacturing area we have implemented safeguards including social distancing, regular cleaning and disinfection of frequently used areas, and staff are wearing protective equipment. We quarantine all deliveries before unpacking, and set up contactless drop zones for all outgoing mail. We’re taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of our employees and members. Q. Will the MedicAlert staff be able to handle calls with the stay at home policy? (Submitted by: Shari)

A. Yes! Both our emergency response and member care teams are working from home. We were able to make a seamless transition from our inhouse call center to a fully virtual operation. The emergency response line is staffed 24/7, and our member care team is operating during our regular hours of Monday – Friday, 8am – 4:30pm PT.

Q. May I still order supplies from MedicAlert during the coronavirus pandemic? (Submitted by: Dorothy)

A. Yes! MedicAlert is fully operational. We continue to accept and process new orders for medical IDs and memberships. Now more than ever, we want to ensure that everyone who needs the protection of MedicAlert can get it. The CDC recommends that anyone with an underlying health condition wear a medical ID as part of your emergency preparedness measures. 

Q. With all the present cuts, is MedicAlert planning any cuts? (Submitted by: Edwin)

A. At the present time, MedicAlert is not planning any cuts. We’ve retained all staff in the switch to a virtual work environment. Given the essential nature of our services, we are committed to supporting both our members and employees during this uncertain time.

Q. For those of us who don’t need any or all of the government “gift” to us, where can we donate some money where it is really needed? (Submitted by: John)

A. We’d be grateful if you would consider a gift to MedicAlert Foundation. Since 1956, MedicAlert has operated as a 501(c)(3) membership organization. Unlike others who provide medical IDs, all of MedicAlert’s revenues go towards funding our 24/7 emergency response center, providing training for first responders, and helping those who need the protection of MedicAlert but are facing financial hardship.
