Q: What is the MedicAlert GPS + Essential device?
A: It is a location tracking device which allows you to Always Know where your loved ones or GPS enabled assets are via your smartphone or computer. The device is equipped with an alert button which, when pressed, will notify you if your loved one needs help. Its small, light-weight form was created to bring simplicity, convenience and performance to our customers, all the while providing peace of mind.

Q: What makes MedicAlert GPS + Essential different from other GPS enabled devices?
A: MedicAlert GPS + Essential uses a patented hybrid tracking technology, which includes Wi-Fi, GPS and Cellular triangulation, to deliver the best accuracy possible, in a small form factor with an extended battery life. It is an all-in-one device offering geofence, tracking and emergency alert capabilities. It is also the only GPS enabled device connected to MedicAlert Foundation's global support network.

Q: How big is it?
A: MedicAlert GPS + Essential is the smallest tracking device on the market today. The device is approximately the size of a domino, about 1″X2″ and weighs less than an ounce (20g).

Q: Can it track indoor locations?
A: In most cases yes. Terrain and structural elements may occasionally obstruct reception, but MedicAlert GPS + Essential can obtain location virtually anywhere.

Q: Can it accurately track locations surrounded by tall buildings?
A: Generally yes. But like all GPS products, urban areas can obstruct reception.

Q: How do I track the device?
A: The device automatically updates its location at regularly timed intervals; simply go to from your smartphone or computer and select your device to view its location.

Q: My loved one is missing, what do I do?
A: Call 911 immediately.

Q: What is Force Locate and how do I use it?
A: Press and release the Alert Button on the device to activate a one-time Force-Locate. Force-Locate provides a way to immediately update the device location. However, this action drains the battery at a faster rate, use only in the case of an emergency.

Q: How do I use MedicAlert GPS + Essential to receive notifications when my loved one wanders outside the house?
A: MedicAlert GPS + Essential allows you to create Safety Zones; when a Safety Zone is breached, you will be notified via text and/or email with the location of the device and directions to its location.

Q: My elderly parent has fallen and can’t get up. How do they use MedicAlert GPS + Essential to get help?
A: Instruct them to Press and hold the Alert Button on the device for 3 seconds until the LED blinks red and green. The device will immediately send an alert message to the predetermined contacts via text and/or email notifying them of the emergency. MedicAlert Foundation will start calling emergency contacts on file and notify them that the Alert Button was pushed. If no one can be reached the local authorities will be called for a wellness check.

Q: Can I see where my child has been throughout the day?
A: Yes. Log into your account and click on the “History” tab. You can then select the day and time window in which you would like to view the location history. The tracking system will display all available location markers with their corresponding timestamp on a map.

Q: Can I use MedicAlert GPS + Essential to track my car?
A: Yes. Note: Do not attach the device under metal parts such as under the trunk or hood as metal can block reception used to provide location.

Q: What is the cellular coverage?

Q: How accurate is the location information?
A: There is no perfectly accurate location tracking technology available due to terrain and structural obstructions, however, MedicAlert GPS + Essential’s patented hybrid technology is typically far more accurate than stand-alone GPS technology. This allows the device to deliver the most accurate positioning available. For example, an outdoor environment with clear sky will provide a more accurate location than indoor. Because the device utilized Wi-Fi mapping, indoor accuracy is superior to that of a conventional GPS product.

Q: My house doesn’t have a Wi-Fi access point, will the device still work?
A: Yes. MedicAlert GPS + Essenital location tracking technology does not depend solely on Wi-Fi access points. It will deliver location positioning using GPS and Cellular technology.

Q: How long does the battery last?
A: The battery can last 4-7 days depending on usage. Generally, the more your device moves, the shorter the battery life.

Q: How long does the device take to fully charge?
A: It takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge a depleted battery.

Q: Can I take the device with me on a plane?
A: Yes. Log into your account and click on the “Settings” tab. You can then switch the device into OFF mode, which is similar to airplane mode. Once landed, simply press and release the button on the device to resume tracking.

Q: Can my child turn the device off?
A: No. The device is designed specifically so that it cannot be turned off by the user.

Q: Can I track multiple devices at the same time?
A: Yes. You can activate more than one device under one account. If you already have an existing account you can add the new device by logging into your account and selecting “Add New Device” from the top menu.

Q: Is eTrak water resistant?
A: Yes. MedicAlert GPS + Essential is water resistant to protect against water splashing damage. Do NOT immerse the device in water.

Q: Is MedicAlert GPS + Essential safe to carry close to the body?
A: Yes. The device is even safer than a cell phone because of the small amount of data it transmits and the amount of time it is in sleeper mode. The device has carefully gone through and passed FCC regulation/certification.

Q: What is MedicAlert GPS + Essential’s warranty?
A: We offer a 1 year limited warranty for our products. We will send you a new device, free of charge, for any manufacturing related issues within the warranty period. Simply go to for a replacement product.

Q: Is there a monthly subscription fee?
A: Yes. In order to provide our services, the device requires a monthly tracking fee.

Q: Can I cancel my subscription?
A: Yes. However, for plans with a service agreement, a $100 termination fee per device will apply to your account if you cancel before the service agreement term ends.

Q: How long after I order my MedicAlert GPS + Essential device will I receive it?
A: orders are processed within 5 days of receiving them. Standard shipping takes 3-5 business days, but you can also opt for 2-day or overnight shipping for an additional fee.
