MedicAlert Foundation Announces the Formation of New “Network” of Elite Emergency Medical Identification Providers
Charity organization establishes network to ensure 24/7 safety and protection for all medical ID wearers
(TURLOCK, Calif., September 4, 2013) – MedicAlert Foundation International, the leading nonprofit emergency information and support network, announced its intent to form a new “network” of elite emergency medical identification providers to elevate standards amongst medical ID developers, create new consumer protections, and provide its 24-hour emergency network to wearers of all participating medical ID companies. Through the creation of the new network, MedicAlert Foundation’s trusted health information and emergency services (which has been credited by more than 100,000 MedicAlert members for saving their lives) will be offered to consumers regardless of the “brand” of their medical ID jewelry. The Foundation’s established standards and procedures will be a condition of participation for all ID companies within the network to ensure consumers are protected and their medical information is communicated properly.
The Foundation will be utilizing its Code of Conduct as the guiding principles for the network. “While our Code of Conduct provides consumers with guidance for evaluating the purchase of a medical ID or emergency medical information service, the establishment of our new ‘network’ will help ensure that organizations offer medical IDs and services that emergency personnel will easily identify, and utilize, in emergency situations,” said Andrew Wigglesworth, president and CEO of MedicAlert Foundation.
MedicAlert’s extensive Code of Conduct was established as the marketplace for medical IDs began changing rapidly, leaving serious concern for the health and safety of consumers that wear them. With nearly 7,000 rare diseases listed by the National Institute of Health, many diseases have names that most emergency personnel rarely encounter, if at all. Appropriate treatment that is effective for the average person may be contradicted in another as a result of their condition. MedicAlert’s 24/7 emergency response service fields thousands of emergency calls each year on behalf of consumers and can communicate treatment information and further detailed information than is available on a medical ID.
With the establishment of the new network, MedicAlert is taking steps to ensuring medical ID and service consumers avoid potentially dangerous situations by protecting privacy through the safe and secure storage of personal health information, creating medical IDs that are recognized by emergency personnel, and adherence to the highest product standards.
“There are numerous organizations seeking to provide emergency medical information and medical IDs to consumers,” said Wigglesworth, adding, “What we want to ensure is a safer platform of products in an unregulated field.”
Hope Paige, a company that offers fashionable and contemporary medical emergency bracelets, is the first provider to join MedicAlert’s new network. “We are proud to forge this partnership with MedicAlert Foundation,” said Shelly Fisher, President and CEO of Hope Paige. Fisher believes the partnership will help elevate standards and further protect many of their customers who could benefit from the additional services MedicAlert provides.
