MedicAlert Foundation and Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States Partner to Enhance 24-Hour Hotline Support

Turlock, California (August 2, 2012) – The sudden unexpected death of a healthy individual undergoing minor surgery is a tragedy almost beyond comprehension in this day of modern medical miracles. Yet this still happens to patients susceptible to malignant hyperthermia (MH). To provide “in the moment” care for patients experiencing MH, the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS) has partnered with MedicAlert Foundation to enhance its 24-hour hotline services. MedicAlert Foundation’s emergency response staff will partner with MHAUS’ professional volunteer MH experts on calls with attending healthcare professionals to successfully manage an MH crisis.

Partnership Offers Service Dependability

The joint partnership between MHAUS and MedicAlert Foundation will offer unmatched dependability as both organizations are trusted resources among healthcare professionals and consumers alike. The MHAUS 24-hour hotline has been in operation since 1982 and provides medical professionals with access to MH experts who can be reached for help with MH crises treatment. MedicAlert Foundation manages thousands of emergency calls each year and has been the leading provider of emergency medical information services since its beginning more than 55 years ago.

MHAUS and MedicAlert Foundation also have a shared mission of protecting and saving lives; this partnership aligns those missions in a very proactive manner. “MedicAlert Foundation has long been known as the most dependable emergency response service as we offer vital information within seconds” says Andrew Wigglesworth, President and CEO of MedicAlert Foundation. “Every day we serve on the ‘front lines’ of medical emergencies – and we are excited to bring our expertise to this partnership in an effort to improve the safety of MH patients.”

“Establishing this joint partnership strengthens our ability to serve MH patients and furthers the credibility of our hotline service among professionals and patients” Dianne Daugherty, Executive Director of MHAUS. “Our team looks forward to this partnership and collaborative effort which will undoubtedly save lives.”
