MedicAlert Foundation International is offering free one-year memberships to its emergency response service to 1,000 low-income children living in Fresno who have asthma.

Children will receive a medical identification bracelet or necklace that alerts emergency workers of the child's medical condition. Allergies, medications and other medical information are available in case of an emergency.

The MedicAlert memberships will be available in May to Fresno families unable to afford the $35 enrollment fee.

To enroll an asthmatic child, parents can call (888) 904-7629 and mention Code 8870.

MedicAlert chose Fresno children for free memberships because of the high rate of asthma in Fresno County. According to the 2001 California Health Interview Survey, 16.4% of the county's children have asthma.

"Just as a concerned neighbor, we really wanted to help the children in that area," said Jenna Jacobsen-Brown, marketing research analyst.

MedicAlert is a Turlock-based nonprofit membership organization.
