MedicAlert will soon offer the E-Healthkey, an intelligent self contained USB-enabled device that is designed to provide critical medical information in emergencies. In addition, it allows the patient to carry his or her complete personal electronic health record at all times. When the key is plugged into the computer, critical information that the patient has previously authorized for viewing automatically appears on the computer screen. Information unauthorized by the patient is secured by data encryption and a password chosen by the patient, giving the user complete control over his or her personal electronic health record, ensuring confidentiality and security.
