Asthma - asth·ma ('az-m&)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2001 estimates, In 2000, asthma accounted for 10.4 million outpatient visits, 1.8 million emergency department visits, 465,000 hospitalizations, and 4,487 deaths.
*31.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with asthma during their lifetime, while 20.3 million are currently diagnosed.

Children are especially vulnerable to asthma. Asthma now affects nearly 5 million people who are younger than 18 years of age, and accounts for 14 million lost days of school missed annually. In addition, asthma is the third-ranking cause of hospitalization among those younger than 15 years of age, and the number of children dying from asthma increased almost threefold from 1979 to 1996.

What is Asthma?

Asthma can be controlled by taking medication and by avoiding contact with environmental "triggers" for asthma. Environmental triggers include cockroaches, dust mites, furry pets, mold, tobacco smoke, and certain chemicals. * Enrolling in MedicAlert® services is another way to manage asthma. MedicAlert provides 24-Hour Emergency Response, which is especially important since asthma attacks may happen at any time.

"MedicAlert gives me added security in case of a medical emergency. You never know when an emergency will take place and if I'm not around, I hope people would see Catherine's bracelet and see her condition on the emblem".
